The role of the immune system in psychosis and schizophrenia

How psychosis and schizophrenia develop is not yet known. Probably it consists of a combination of triggers, such as genetics and the environment. The immune system potentially plays an important role. Studies have shown that the immune cells in the brains of patients with psychosis show an increased activity, potentially contributing to the symptoms of the disease.  A better understanding of the role of the immune system, enables us to contribute to the development of new treatments strategies for psychosis and schizophrenia.
