Insight into bipolar disorder

Previous research has shown that patients with a bipolar disorder often have limited insight into their disease. In addition, other investigations have shown that this insight is associated with neurocognitive functioning. However, in order to develop a thorough clinicial insight, patients need to have the capacity to self-reflect and the ability to let go of negative thoughts. Both of these capacities are encompassed in the concept of cognitive insight. Due to its clinical relevance, it is of utmost importance to investigate how cognitive insight can be enhanced in bipolar patients.

This project aims to clarify how cognitive insight relates to neurocognitive variables, clinical insight, metacognition, symptomatology and functional endpoints. This knowledge will enable us to create better training and to reach higher functional endpoints.
