The role of inflammation in bipolar disorders

Patients with a bipolar disorder show slightly increased levels of inflammatory markers in their blood. These inflammatory markers could potentially lead to brain damage. We suspect that this inflammation potentially contributes to a more severe disease progression, more cognitive impairments and therapy resistance. In this project we aim to determine the role of inflammatory disturbances associated with:

  • the severity of depression or manic symptoms,

  • the severity of cognitive impairments,

  • the severity of disease progression.
